INDOOR NO2 CONCENTRATIONS IN UNDERGROUND ENVIRONMENTS AND PERSONAL EXPOSURE LEVELS OF NITROGEN DIOXIDE OF TRAFFIC POLICEMEN

Abstract
This study was undertaken to investigate indoor NO2 concentrations and personal exposure to N02 of traffic policemen during August 3, 1988-January i9, 1989 in the Seoul area. The mean N02 concentrations of the underground shopping center of the¢¥, Kangnam Bus Terminal among selected underground environments during summer season were the highest with¢¥ 89.1 ppb and it appeared 1.8 times higher than the Korea ambient NO2 standard of 50 ppb, while the mean N02 concentrations in fabric stores of the Kangnam Bus Terminal during winter season were the highest with 13.1.1 ppb. Personal exposure levels of NO2 of traffic policemen were 47.0 ppb and it appeared much higher than expected.
Prevalence rate of respiratory symptoms by dwellers in underground environments seemed to be related to higher indoors NO concentrations. From these results, it seemed that N02 standard in the underground shopping areas should be carefully established in the near future.
